University Hall, Third Floor

Born in China, Xie is a contemporary artist and Stanford University Art Professor known for his photo-realist representations of literature and media. In works on paper, photographs, installations, videos, etchings, and oil on linen and canvas, Xie stacks books, front pages of newspapers, and book bindings showing snippets of content in lush, atmospheric palettes:

Subject matter always is important to me. In the paintings of books and newspapers, my subject is the documentation, or material form of time, memory, thought, and history. Commenting on the importance of media to record contemporary and historical culture, society, and politics, Xie highlights the profundity of life, history, and information within the bounds of paper.

Xie earned his MFA from both The Central Academy of Arts & Design in Beijing and The University of North Texas. His work has been presented in many solo and group exhibitions around the world, including a solo exhibition at The Stanford Art Gallery in 2016 and at Art Basel Hong Kong in 2018 and 2019. His work is exhibited and collected by additional leading institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, The San Jose Museum of Art, The Denver Art Museum and The Asia Society of New York.

You can watch a conversation discussing his artwork and inspirations with art advisor Danielle Wohl in the Talks with the Artists interview series below.
