One of the final steps in transforming Stanford Redwood City from a state-of-the-art campus into a vibrant workplace is the recently completed installation of more than 300 works of art, including paintings, murals and artist posters throughout the campus. The artworks were chosen to complement the contemporary look of the interior architecture and speak to the indoor and outdoor elements of the campus setting.
Silicon Valley art adviser Danielle Wohl was enlisted to curate the art collection for the Redwood City campus in collaboration with a Stanford art committee comprised of Christopher Bright, Redwood City campus director; Stephen Pond, project executive with the Department of Project Management; Zach Pozner, director of architecture; Matthew Tiews, associate vice president for campus engagement; and Elizabeth Zacharias, vice president for human resources.
“The goal was to curate a cohesive, dynamic and engaging art collection that is sensitive to and reflective of Stanford Redwood City,” Wohl said about the project. “Art can contribute to a collaborative, supportive environment as well as foster a sense of empathy and self-awareness. Placing art in the workspace of Stanford Redwood City has a significant impact on the people in the space. Stanford is demonstrating a commitment to employees by creating an environment that is beautiful and meaningful.”
The artwork collection includes paintings, photographs and works on paper including monotypes, lithographs, ink jet prints and murals by Stanford alumni and faculty and by California and national artists. Contemporary artist posters support and enhance the dynamic range of the original art. Each original artwork is accompanied by a label with information about the artwork and the artist.
Wohl and the art committee also commissioned several hand-painted, site-specific murals on multiple floors. The murals were painted directly on the walls, making them an integral part of the workspace design.
