Cardinal Hall, Third Floor

Carlos Andrade (1922-2018) is an internationally renowned American printmaker, drawer, and painter. Inspired by the imagery of ancient Mediterranean, African, and Middle Eastern cultures and likened to architectural facades, courtyard doors, tiled walls, shields, and panels Andrade’s work is rich with rhythmic patterns, symbols, text, decoration, and geometric design. In lithographs, acrylic on panel and wood, and with both color and monotone palettes, he blends delicacy with boldness and tranquility with vibrancy, creating compositions full of beauty and movement.

Andrade earned his BFA from The John Herron School of Art in 1948. He was quickly recognized for his expertise in printmaking; in 1960, became the first Technical Director of the Tamarind Institute of Lithography in Los Angeles. He went on to teach at the University of New Mexico in their Department of Art, co-wrote The Tamarind Book of Lithography with Clinton Adams in 1971, and received numerous awards, honors, and international recognition. His art is collected by major institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Boston Museum of Art, The Guggenheim Museum, New York, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Smithsonian Museum of Art, and The Library of Congress.
